Upon earning his license to practice law, Geoffrey R. McDonald became a sole practitioner for approximately two years in Richmond, Virginia. It was during this time that Mr. McDonald began to concentrate his practice in workers' compensation and personal injury in addition to maintaining a general practice. In 1991, the AFL-CIO recognized Mr. McDonald as a union privileges lawyer. At that point, he decided to focus his practice exclusively on representing injured workers.

Based on referrals from local unions and an aggressive representation, Mr. McDonald soon developed one of the largest workers' compensation practices in Central Virginia. In 1992, Mr. McDonald hired his first associate, and in 1993 he formed a partnership with another well known workers' compensation attorney. The firm was then known as McDonald & Snesil.

In 1996, the firm of Geoffrey R. McDonald & Associates was born. Mr. McDonald continues to concentrate his practice in workers' compensation and personal injury. In 1999, Gregory O. Harbison became an associate with the firm, where he divides his practices between workers' compensation, social security disability law, and long term disability cases. In January 2000, the firm moved its Richmond headquarters into its current location after purchasing an office building.

In January of 2004, Martin R. Johnson joined the firm as an associate and concentrates on personal injury and product liability cases. Daniel B. Wilson joined the firm in August of 2004 to help with the heavy workers’ compensation caseload. In October, Daniel passed the bar exam and became an associate with the firm.

Geoffrey R. McDonald & Associates has grown steadily through aggressive representation and the support of clients and labor unions. The firm has on staff a union liaison, Basil Surgent, who coordinates educational programs and seminars for local unions and their members throughout Virginia. The firm's attorneys routinely lobby the Virginia General Assembly in an attempt to obtain laws more favorable to working families and injury victims.
