Every case is different and there is no way to predict what turns a case may take. Even fairly straightforward matters can suddenly become more expensive and complicated depending on the situations that arise. Therefore, lawyers must charge for their time and advice by the hour. To give good legal service, a lawyer must be supported by an office, a staff, an up-to-date library, computers and software, other modern equipment such as fax machines and copiers, supplies, and insurance-all extremely expensive items. Over 60 percent of a lawyer's hourly fee is expended on overhead and support services. Although these overhead costs are unavoidable, they also actually help to reduce a client's costs. A lawyer's use of legal assistants, for example, is billed to the client at a lower hourly rate. Use of computer research and other office equipment saves hours of time to the client. Much of the work done on a client's case is accomplished outside court or after the client leaves the office. For this reason, clients may misunderstand how much work is actually being done for them. Your attorney will be sending you copies of all correspondence and documents drafted in your case, but those final drafts represent hours of organizing and analyzing information, researching applicable law, and devising and negotiating solutions in addition to conferring with clients and others in person and on the telephone.
