Community Commitment In addition to knowing our clients on a professional level, we also believe in actively participating with them in the community.? We are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities in which we work and live; every year, our employees contribute thousands of volunteer service hours to non-profit organizations in the San Antonio and South Texas areas.? By way of example, in 2004, Cox & Smith was honored to receive the prestigious President's Award from the San Antonio Bar Association, which recognizes an individual or group that has exhibited outstanding service to the community.? This marked the first time in the award's history that it has been bestowed upon a law firm.? Additionally, United Way recently awarded Cox Smith Matthews a Bowie Award, an award given to leading organizations that support the community through United Way, for the success of the Firm's 2004 campaign.? ? Commitment to Diversity We believe that diversity enhances our firm and our community.? We directly benefit from having attorneys and other legal professionals from a wide spectrum of cultural backgrounds.? According to the Annual Report on the Status of Racial/Ethnic Minorities in the State Bar of Texas (2004-2005), 6.7 percent of Texas Bar members are Hispanic/Latino.? Currently at Cox Smith Matthews, 11 percent of our attorneys are Hispanic/Latino and nearly 40 percent of our attorneys are women and/or minorities.??
Cox Smith Matthews has adopted a unified approach to minority recruiting, hiring, retention and promotion.? Our Recruiting Committee openly discusses minority recruiting, and implements specific plans tailored to accelerate our minority hiring.? We lead by example, with a Hiring Shareholder of Mexican-American descent.? Additionally, Cox Smith Matthews annually attends minority recruiting fairs to identify, interview and recruit minority students for our summer program.? We remain a very consistent on-campus recruiter at St. Mary's University Law School and the University of Texas School of Law, both of which were recently ranked by Hispanic Business Magazine in the top five law schools in the nation for Hispanic students.? The results of this leadership effort are shown by the dramatic increase in summer associate and new associate employment throughout the late 1990s and early part of the 2000s.? By way of example, Cox Smith Matthews extended 18 offers for the Fall of 2005 to candidates from our Summer program.? Of the 18 offers, 44 percent were minority candidates and 56 percent were female candidates.
Our commitment to diversity remains strong throughout an attorney's development at Cox Smith Matthews.? All employees are considered for all positions without regard to race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, marital or veteran status or disability.
