Maria concentrates his practice in international business transactions, with an emphasis on international franchising and distribution. He helps clients develop international development strategies, assisting in the tax analysis and structural implementation of all matters outside of the United States. In addition to assisting clients in franchise-related transactions (such as master franchising, development agreements, and direct franchising), he has helped clients in a host of different types of direct investment transactions, particularly in Latin America.

Mr. Santa Maria's international practice extends to complex joint venture agreements, international real estate development contracts, licensing contracts, labor and employment agreements and contract manufacturing agreements, among others. His practice also includes the representation of several Internet companies and Internet incubators.

Having been raised in Mexico City, Mr. Santa Maria speaks fluent Spanish and deals in a seamless manner in most Latin American jurisdiction. He is a frequent speaker on international matters. Before entering the private practice of law, he worked as a financial analyst in leveraged buyouts in the transportation industry and as a Registered Investment Advisor. Mr. Santa Maria is a member of the Piper Rudnick Diversity, Hiring, and Pro Bono Committees.

In both 2003 and 2004, Mr. Santa Maria has been cited as a Texas Super Lawyer. The Texas Super Lawyers are chosen in an extensive process of polling, screening, and research- a joint project of the magazines Law & Politics and Texas Monthly.

Mr. Santa Maria was chosen to be the first outside general counsel for the North Texas Food Bank, a nonprofit food distribution center that serves 400 hunger-relief agencies in 13 North Texas counties. He fills that role on a pro bono basis.
