Michael A. Hummert was born in Dallas, Texas in 1957. Mike graduated with honors in 1979 from the University of Texas at Arlington, with a special honor in History. Mike was a member of the History Honor Society and Alpha Chi while at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1982, Mike received his Juris Doctorate degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas, graduating with honors. He was a member of The Order of the Coif. While at SMU, Mike served as an editor of the Journal of Air Law & Commerce. He received special recognition and an award for a published article, "A Criticism of Judicially Adopted Comparative Partial Indemnity As A Means of Circumventing Pro Rata Contribution Statutes," 47 Journal of Air Law & Commerce 117, 1981, which addressed judicial interpretations of pro-rata contribution statutes. Before joining the firm of Bishop & Hummert in July 1992, Mike was a named shareholder in the Dallas law firm of Bracken & Hummert, where he specialized in insurance defense litigation. He handled general liability and workers' compensation claims for insurers and self-insurers, as well as the defense of governmental entities and public officials. In addition to his experience defending insurance claims in all areas of tort law, Mike has for many years also practiced extensively in the coverage arena. Mike has presented papers to the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, and has spoken to various professional groups on topics ranging from tort reform to insurance coverage. Mike is admitted to practice in all Texas state courts, as well as the Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern Federal District Courts of Texas. He is also licensed to practice in all Texas appellate courts, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mike is a member of the American and Texas Bar Associations, as well as the Texas and Dallas Associations of Defense Counsel.
