I started my own practice in 1983 and at that time I agreed to represent people for almost any legal need that they had. For a while, many areas of law were new to me, but since I was young and my law practice was small, I had the time to develop insight into the complexity of various types of legal matters. Of course, clients were not billed for my extra time for consulting with my law school professors, having lunch meetings with local specialists or spending countless hours in the law library. Shortly thereafter this extra time was no longer necessary and I felt confident to negotiate any matter or make an argument on behalf of a client to a judge or jury.

In only a few years I realized that by having a lot of knowledge in other areas of law I was able to help clients with their specific problems with both straightforward and innovative strategies.

For example, by handling complex real estate matters, bankruptcies, personal injury and workers’ compensation matters I was able to put that knowledge to work in divorce matters.

There are many complicated assets to be divided in most divorce cases and quite often there are very complicated issues in a personal injury matter, such as the rights of a spouse and financial concerns when an injured person is unable to work. Examples of how intimate knowledge of various areas of law can be helpful for a specific problem can be listed and detailed in thousands of ways and I find that when I give a consultation to a potential client the insight into many areas of law helps to provide fast solutions to client’s problem.

Many years ago I handled a difficult child custody matter and my opposing attorney was Stephen M. Older, Esquire. I was so impressed with how he handled his client’s case and how he dealt with me that when the case was over I called him to offer him a job in my law firm. A few years later he became my partner and now I am proud to be a partner in The Law Offices of Black & Older. Although my partner and I handle many areas of law, we are associated with many other attorneys and have attorneys work with us “of counsel.” There are times that we feel a particular client may be best served by an attorney other than Mr. Older or me. This decision is ultimately left to the particular client.
