A life-long Ohio resident, Helen earned her B.A. in communication disorders from the University of Akron and her J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law. Prior to joining Whalen & Compton, Helen served as Assistant Attorney General under Attorneys General Lee Fisher and Betty Montgomery in the Labor Section, acting as legal counsel to the State Employment Relations Board and the Department of Industrial Relations. She has represented school districts in both state and federal courts including the Northern and Southern District Courts of Ohio. Helen is a member of the American, Ohio and Akron Bar Associations and the Ohio Counsel of School Board Attorneys. She also served as board member, Vice President and President of Ohio's Public Sector Labor Relations Association. Additionally, Helen is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Ohio Council of School Board Attorneys.

Helen has spoken to a variety of groups on school and other labor law issues, including collective bargaining, unlawful discrimination and special education. She has also served as a speaker at several programs presented by the Ohio Schools Boards Association, including OSBA's Capital Conference and OCSBA's Spring Seminar.

Helen assists clients in the negotiation process as well as provides advice related to implementation and administration of collective bargaining agreements. She regularly represents boards of education in special education matters, including complaint resolution through the Ohio Department of Education, representation at IEP meetings, due process hearings and, if necessary, subsequent state or federal litigation.
