Founded in 1937, Ingerman Smith, L.L.P. provides a wide array of legal services to numerous educational, municipal and corporate clients. Among the firm's clients are school districts located throughout the New York region as well as colleges, universities, cooperative education institutions, and libraries. Ingerman Smith has extensive experience in a diverse spectrum of legal matters including education law, labor practices, construction law, and employment discrimination and frequently provides these services to private sector corporations.

The firm has been engaged in many notable education lawsuits during the past three decades. We acted as counsel in the early 1980's representing the Northport School District in an action against the Commissioner of Education regarding the District's issuance of diplomas to handicapped students in defiance of the Commissioner's order that the students be granted a "certificate." This suit resulted in the enactment of legislation requiring the issuance of annotated diplomas to handicapped students.

More recently, we represented the Monroe-Woodbury School District before the Supreme Court in the Kiryas Joel School District suit involving claims of violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment. In a similar vein, we represented the Bedford School District in recent litigation claiming that the District's curriculum violates the Establishment Clause.

There are hundreds of other court decisions in education law, employment discrimination law and other areas affecting colleges, school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services in which the firm has acted as counsel.

Members of the firm have practiced labor relations law for over twenty-nine years. During this period, the firm has successfully negotiated hundreds of agreements for our education and municipal clients. We have litigated countless numbers of proceedings before the Public Employment Relations Board and the National Labor Relations Board, including trials and appeals, labor arbitration, myriad numbers of federal and state court proceedings involving labor matters, as well as nearly countless appearances before the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission and the New York Sate Division of Human Rights.

The firm is committed to the use of alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") process, including mediation and arbitration, when appropriate to the goals and best interests of our clients. We are very well experienced in the use of ADR in both labor and general litigation. We have participated in the successful mediation of many lawsuits and labor negotiations disputes. We recently represented the Town of Huntington in a complex series of over forty claims of employment discrimination under the aegis of a single complex ADR agreement negotiated by the firm with the plaintiffs' counsel.
