P.B. Stratton founded the firm in 1898. For many years it operated as Statton & Stephenson. In 1950, P.B.'s Son Henry joined the firm. Later the firm was known as Stratton, May & Hays. Under Henry's leadership the firm became regionally known for its practice in the fields of general litigation, real estate and mineral law, banking and commercial law, insurance defense, product liability and workers' compensation. Henry's sons, David and Dan joined the firm in the late 1970's. Stephen Hogg, the son of the former Letcher County Judge F. Byrd Hogg, joined the firm in 1980. Edward Maddox joined the firm in1996. David reorganized the firm in 1997 as Stratton, Hogg & Maddox, P.S.C.
