Attorney Firm Profile

Matthews & Steel takes on a limited number of cases so that each case can be handled with the care and attention that it deserves. We employ a dedicated and experienced staff of legal professionals, but unlike many other civil litigation firms which use investigators and paralegals for sensitive tasks, the lawyers of Matthews & Steel personally attend to the sensitive and important aspects of cases, such as investigating accidents, understanding the client's particular needs, keeping the client informed of developments, interviewing witnesses, and locating and developing expert witnesses. Our lawyers and staff work together as a dedicated team of professionals with a single-minded purpose - - to help our client.

We can sum up our philosophy and goals with five points:

  • We represent people, not numbers or "cases".

We do not view our clients as mere "cases"; rather, we view and treat our clients as individuals, and endeavor to treat each client with respect and understanding. We serve our clients during difficult periods, after they have experienced injuries or death in their families. Our goal is to help our clients through these difficult times with understanding and compassion while providing our clients with the best legal representation.

  • We provide personal service.

We are dedicated to providing personal service. As trial attorneys, our ultimate service to our clients is to represent them in court, which necessitates a personal understanding of each case, including the clients, the witnesses, the doctors, and the facts. To win at trial, a lawyer must be committed to his client's cause, and personally preparing the case for trial is the best way to develop this commitment. We take on a limited number of cases because we are committed to spending the time needed to thoroughly prepare each case.

  • We want our clients to understand the legal system and participate.

We want our clients to understand their rights and the legal system. We will explain the factors that go into the process of each claim or lawsuit, from start to finish. Our goal is to have our clients participate in their cases, not watch from the sidelines. We want our clients to understand what we do, and why we do it. This is important because we believe the client should help make many important decisions, such as whether to settle or go to trial. We provide advice and counsel based on our experience, but we recognize that in serving individuals, each case is different. Our goal is to involve our clients so that they can make informed choices about their cases.

  • We are frank and honest with clients and expect the same.

We are frank and honest with our clients. In turn, we enjoy representing clients who conduct themselves with honesty and integrity. Credibility, of both the lawyer and the client, is one of the most important aspects of a lawsuit, especially during these times when there is widespread distrust of lawyers and the legal system.

  • We attempt to maximize your recovery, through settlement or a jury trial.

Our goal is to maximize our clients' recovery. Unfortunately, too many lawyers take cases with the idea that the cases will quickly settle, or that the defendants will pay a little money to make cases go away. Other lawyers take so many cases that cases are forced to settle because the lawyers cannot prepare such a high volume of cases for trial. In these situations, the client suffers. Every case we take is prosecuted as if the case were going to trial; preparing for trial is the only way to achieve the maximum value for a claim, whether the case settles or goes to a jury. If we cannot settle a case for a fair amount, we are always prepared to go to trial.
