The firm's first cases involved representing textile workers diagnosed with the occupational disease, byssinosis, or "brown lung." By the mid-1980's, the firm began to handle cases involving asbestos, product liability, medical malpractice, and wrongful death, despite the difficult and complex nature of such litigation. In 1983 it began its successful work with victims of the Dalkon Shield IUD, which continued for more than fifteen years.
