In 1893, John D. Morgan, a native New Yorker, established offices near Wall Street for the practice of intellectual property law that would become the firm Morgan & Finnegan.

Mr. Morgan represented the innovators of what would become some of the most important inventions of America's 20th Century technology. These included inventions for railroad and coal mining, as well as those key to the automobile industry.

Joined in the 1920’s by George B. Finnegan, Jr., a California native and graduate of West Point and Fordham Law School, the firm’s law practice expanded to include the energy-related industries of the era. Work in these emerging industries helped to place Morgan & Finnegan at the forefront of the growth in petroleum, chemicals and plastics.

In more recent history, two inventions based on patents prosecuted by Morgan & Finnegan attorneys, one for a portable computer navigational system and the other for synthetic diamonds, are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The firm also has received a certificate of recognition from the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1991 for its contribution to a client's prime time Emmys. The award was for outstanding achievement in engineering for the development of a new lighting system.
