Our Washington, D.C., office, which opened in 1987, represents our national and international clients in their dealings with the political, judicial and regulatory authorities of the U.S. government. Shearman & Sterling's D.C. lawyers practice in five principal areas: litigation; international trade and government relations; tax; antitrust; and corporate finance.

The litigation practice advises clients in federal investigations as well as in arbitrations and trial and appellate litigations in various courts. The trade practice involves advising U.S. and non-U.S. companies, trade associations and government agencies in connection with a range of international and U.S. trade matters, including trade agreements, dispute settlement proceedings and administrative investigations under national trade laws, such as antidumping and countervailing duty cases.

The tax practice involves both counseling and dispute resolution, with a strong focus on the taxation of financial instruments. The antitrust practice involves advising clients on antitrust law issues as they relate to a broad range of business activities, such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, trade practices, pricing policies and marketing, distribution and licensing arrangements. The corporate finance practice involves counseling leading financial services companies in connection with public and private offerings of securities; organization and operation of mutual funds, hedge funds and other investment vehicles; mergers and acquisitions; compliance and regulatory matters; and the development of sophisticated investment products and services, including Internet use and other technological advances.

Lawyers in the Washington, D.C., office work closely with clients located in countries around the world, including Mexico, Switzerland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and China. The office also works on international arbitrations in Europe and on cross-border disputes. In addition, it advocates client interests before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the Executive Branch, independent regulatory agencies and a number of other decision-making bodies.
